The UTM appliance vendor Cyberoam has introduced a VMware-based virtual SSL VPN appliance.

Cyberoam is among very few players in the remote office security solutions space that run separate SSL VPN platforms to provide greater flexibility to organizations in purchasing solutions that meet their individual security guidelines and infrastructure.

Cyberoam claims that its SSL VPN solutions allow clientless browser-based access to geographically- distributed networks through a browser, and offer in-office experience for internal applications and resources including Microsoft Outlook, intranets, web applications, and FTP. Also, local desktops and laptop can securely traverse existing UTMs/ firewalls in the network to access remote data services, without any risk of exposing the confidential information to hackers, the vendor states.

Citing some research figures, Cyberoam informs that the global market of SSL VPN products was estimated at $506 million in 2008, and was slated to grow at 14 per cent till 2012.

Says Tushar Sighat, Vice President – Operations, Cyberoam-India, "In our offering of VMware-based virtual appliances, customers get a virtual SSL VPN machine, available as a downloadable image, which obviates the need to buy a hardware appliance. This helps them reduce the total cost of ownership and at the same time, easily perform any future upgrades by simple reallocation of their existing physical resources for the virtual appliance."

Sighat adds, "We are aware, there are other organizations that are still in a transition phase towards their virtualization goals. For them, we offer two other options–a dedicated appliance and as a software installer that fits into their existing machines."
